What a Volunteer Tax Preparer does:
- Talk with clients to gather necessary information to prepare their tax return
- Prepare tax returns by entering data into TaxWise software
- Explain the tax return to the client and answer questions
- Ask the Tax Center Manager and Volunteer Coordinator any questions you may have – we’re always available to help you
- We will teach you how to prepare taxes in up to 10 hours of training
- After the training, volunteer tax preparers will take a test to be certified by the IRS
Volunteer Tax Preparers should be comfortable:
- Using Windows based software
- Working with people from all walks of life
- Volunteering in a fast paced environment
Other Ways to volunteer for the Community Tax Centers:
Intake Specialist:
- Welcome clients to the tax center
- Review and organize client documents
- Talk with clients to gather necessary information to prepare their tax return
- Attend a 3 hour training
Translator:
- 20% of our clients speak only Spanish
- Use your language skills to help clients understand the filing process
- No tax law knowledge required!
- Orientation will be provided
Time Requirements for all volunteers:
From January to April volunteers commit to at least one 3 hour shift per week or 36 hours.
